The weather in Central Illinois can change in an hour. One moment you're driving down I-74 in clear conditions, the next you're dealing with a sudden snowstorm. Here's what every driver should keep in their trunk.

The Essential Checklist

Starting & Power

  • Jumper cables - 12-16 feet, heavy gauge (4-6 gauge)
  • Portable jump starter - Doesn't require another vehicle
  • Phone charger - Car adapter or portable battery pack
  • Flashlight - LED with extra batteries

Warmth & Visibility

  • Wool blanket - Retains warmth even when wet
  • Extra gloves and hat - Stored in sealed bag
  • Hand warmers - Chemical warmers last 8+ hours
  • Reflective triangles or flares - Make yourself visible
  • Bright safety vest - If you need to exit the vehicle

Traction & Digging

  • Small folding shovel - Dig out from snow
  • Cat litter or sand - Creates traction under tires
  • Ice scraper with brush - Heavy-duty, not flimsy
  • Tow strap - If someone can pull you out

Sustenance & First Aid

  • Bottled water - At least 2 bottles (check for freezing)
  • Non-perishable snacks - Granola bars, nuts, dried fruit
  • Basic first aid kit - Bandages, antiseptic, medications
  • Whistle - Attracts attention if stranded

Storage Tip: Keep everything in a waterproof bin or duffel bag. Check supplies each fall before winter hits and replace expired items.

Nice-to-Have Additions

  • Small tool kit (screwdrivers, pliers, adjustable wrench)
  • Duct tape and zip ties
  • Windshield washer fluid (winter formula)
  • Paper maps of Illinois (phones can die)
  • Extra windshield wiper blades

When Your Kit Isn't Enough

An emergency kit helps you stay safe while waiting for help, but some situations require professional assistance:

  • Battery is completely dead (portable starter doesn't work)
  • Stuck in snow or ice beyond what cat litter can solve
  • Mechanical breakdown
  • Flat tire you can't safely change
